Illustration is a unique form of visual language. Its purpose is to code the content visually and to reveal it in the best way. That's why an illustrator has to implement a few consistent steps if he wants to speak clearly and be persuasive through an image.
The illustrator should highlight the main aspects of the content. Also, he should take into consideration the perceiver's character and try to look at the picture from the viewer’s perspective, imagining the reaction it may provoke. Finally, it is very important to make a desired impact on the viewer: to affect his mind, feelings or behavior. All these steps intertwine and complement each other from the beginning of the process till the final result.
As language has its moods and ways of expression, so does the illustration. That is an especially meaningful aspect in food illustration. This type of illustration among other features has a specific one: it should be gorgeous and appetizing, grab attention and stimulate the perceiver's sense of taste. The final aim of food illustration is to encourage the perceiver to taste the product and to sense its flavor even before buying it.
That's why the illustrations for Veggo brand are always one of the most anticipated tasks for me.
This time I have created two sweet compositions of the tofu desserts. The illustrations are composed of different materials, textures and colours. Creating the visual sense of caramel and chocolate topping of the pie was one of the biggest challenges of these illustrations. Also, I had a great pleasure to reveal a wide palette of brown colour hues and to combine them into two harmonious compositions. Even though, the illustrations like these are commercial ones and require to depict the object more beautifully than it really is (yet, not overdoing it), they give me an opportunity to have a closer look at the objects and gain unexpectedly surprising artistic benefits.
The first step of the creative process was to make linear drawings.
Later these drawings were adjusted and improved before submitting the final compositions.
